The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 2007, 5,657 workers died in workplace accidents. 1,204 of these fatalities took place in the construction industry. 4.2 out of every 100 workers in the US in 2007 was a victim of an occupational injury or illness- over 4 million people nationwide. In New Jersey alone, the total cases of workplace injury and illness topped 125,000. Delaware industry injury rates were 3.4 in 2007 for every 100 workers.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry (www.dli.state.pa.us), 110,657 workers were injured in the workplace in 2006. Of that number, 10,055 were in the construction industry, which accounts for a large portion of the statewide injury total. OSHA provides strict safety guidelines for the construction industry, yet not all accidents can be avoided. Tragically, 21 of the reported Pennsylvania construction injuries in 2006 were fatal.
Further broken down, 2,399 injuries were sustained during the construction of buildings in Pennsylvania in 2006. 1,369 injuries occurred during heavy & civil engineering construction, and 6,287 specialty trade contractors reported injuries as well.
