Pennslvania construction accident attorneys provide fatality statistics occurring in construction accidents in the U.S.
The construction industry employs about 8% of the country’s workers, yet accounts for approximately 22% of the fatalities suffered in private industry. The combination of heavy machinery, working at heights, and tools and equipment with multiple workers at a busy construction site yields a potentially very dangerous workplace. How dangerous the workplace is demonstrated by U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics.
In 2007, in Pennsylvania construction accidents, a total of 220 workers died in private industry. Forty-six of those were employed in the construction industry – approximately 21% of all private industry fatalities. Of those 46 deaths, eight occurred as the result of contact with objects and equipment, nine occurred as the result of a transportation incident, 3 occurred because of an attack or violent assault, and 25 occurred because of falls. No other private industry was even close to the number of fatalities due to falls suffered in the construction industry.
22% of falls occurred from roof falls, 16% from ladder falls, and 11% from falling off of scaffolding in 2006. Of the 827 fatal falls, nearly two in five involved falls from roofs or ladders.
